Church of Uganda urges christians to establish family altars

Kampala – The Province of Church of Uganda through the Provincial Mothers Union and Family Life Office has launched the family prayer guide for 2022 with a call to families to dedicate more time to praying together and establishment of family prayer altars.

At an event held at the Provincial Secretariat in Namirembe on Wednesday, January 12, Rev. Canon Captain Titus Baraka the Director of Missions and Outreach in Church of Uganda who represented the Archbishop, The Most Rev. Kaziimba Mugalu called for special prayers for those in positions of spiritual leadership and those that intercede for the Church and for children as they go back to school.

“This prayer guide is to help us pray for families. We need to pray for our spiritual leaders and intercessors. The temptations are many but only with prayer, they can overcome. We encourage families to begin family prayer altars to pray for their children, to pray for them as schools begin so that God guides and protects them and grooms them in a way that gives him glory and honour.” Canon Baraka said.

The Provincial Mothers’ Union President Canon Dr. Ruth Senyonyi encouraged families to get copies of the prayer guide end use them at all times to overcome any form of afflictions in their lives.

“The prayer guide has a weekly guide on how to read the bible, what passages to read and how to pray. I encourage each one of you in your family to get a copy so that you can lead your children, your husband or wife into prayer every day.” Dr. Ruth Senyonyi advised.

Canon Dr. Ruth Senyonyi who is a renowned counsellor and expert in human psychology encouraged families going through any forms of afflictions to get copies of the prayer guide for spiritual nourishment and restoration of hope by the scriptures.

“Prayer opens up many doors. When you bring all the things challenging you and all the afflictions to the Lord in prayer, you will be encouraged because God listens. I encourage you to read the word and pray every day and you will overcome all your afflictions.” Dr. Senyonyi noted.

She added, “Our theme is based on the Provincial Theme: Hope beyond affliction, Lamentations 3:21-24. I pray that you will be reminded that even with all afflictions you have gone through, our God remains God and will always take care. He is loving and faithful.”

She noted that the prayer guide will be launched in all parts of the Province and sliplets will be shared every week to remind families of what is in the book and how to use it with families.

Mrs. Barbara Mugisha the Provincial Mothers’ Union and Family Life Coordinator explained that the purpose of the prayer guide is to boost family altars in families and to reignite hope beyond affliction.

“There is need to reignite hope in families, there is need to restore hope amongst people facing all sorts of afflictions and harassment. There is need for emphasizing establishment of prayer altars in families because when they go through family altars, we believe there is hope, we believe that they are able to have their hope restored.” Mrs. Mugisha said.

Church of Uganda Provincial Mothers Union and Family Life Office has previously produced other key guides including positive parenting guide, premarital counselling guide and the lady or gentleman of honour.
