Kampala– Parliament has temporarily been closed following a shortage of water.
This follows a directive on Friday issued by the office of the Clerk to Parliament in an internal memo issued to the staff including Members of Parliament to vacate the building until otherwise communicated.
“Hon Members, following the earlier communication about the shortage of water in Parliament and closure of sanitary facilities, the Clerk to Parliament advises Members and staff of Parliament to vacate the building,” part of the memo read.
Adding that “The Department of Sergeant at Arms will provide updates on the progress of works as from National Water and Sewerage Corporation – NWSC. There will also be communication once the services are back to normal”.
Several staff of Parliament and some MPs were being seen walking out of the building in compliance as cleaners moved around to lock sanitary places. The Parliament canteen was also out of bound.
On Thursday, NWSC issued a public alert that it was handling an emergency fault at Ggaba 3 water treatment plant and that it would affect the water supply in the City Centre.
According to the management, the fault has interrupted water supply in Nakasero, Kololo, areas along Port Bell road up to Bugolobi, Mukwano, Kanyanya, Nabweru, Kawempe Mbogo, and surrounding areas.
The interruption has also affected Muyenga service areas of Acacia Avenue, Wandegeya, Namirembe, Maganja, Kagoma, Matugga, Nansana, Nakulabye, Bakuli, parts of the City centre and surrounding areas.
