UNRA to visit wrecked Bata bridge

Dokolo. Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) team is set to visit the wrecked Bata bridge on Wednesday.

With schools soon to open and market day (Saturday) around the corner, residents are worried.

The bridge which connects three districts of Amolatar, Dokolo and Alebtong at Bata town council got damaged following a heavy downpour during Easter weekend leaving transport paralyzed.

The road is among the top five economic routes in the region and was earmarked for further improvement by UNRA.

Following an alert by LBS Newsday, the Regional manager UNRA Gulu office Adwek Makmot Jimmy confirmed that a team would be visiting the area on Wednesday to ascertain the magnitude of the problem and come up with a solution.

Sandra a resident confirmed that soil on both sides of the Omara Ebeng road has been washed away. This leaves a narrow passage that you can use but in fear of falling. Luzino Omara the area LC1 of Bung cell, Bata town council where the bridge is located confirmed the damaged culverts and attributed it to an overflow of water.

“That bridge is next to the ‘Aluko Jani’ dam but because of poor management of the dam weed has overwhelmed it leaving no room for water flow hence causing damage to the culverts,” Omara told LBS Newsday.

Charles Odoch, a bodaboda rider and resident of Alebtong district says that the damage is causing them to fear especially when carrying heavy loads.

Several users are praying that the bridge is worked on before Saturday market day that many use to access Bata market.
