Kampala -The Anglican diocese of Kampala has launched a clean-up exercise in communities as part of activities to mark golden jubilee.
The exercise commenced on Saturday in Kalerwe slums where Archbishop Dr Stephen Kazimba Mugalu who doubles as the diocesan bishop and other clergy were joined by officials from Kampala Capital City Authority and community members to spread the gospel of cleanliness.
Speaking during the launch of the exercise at St Nicholas Church of Uganda, Kalerwe, the Archbishop reminded the community of the need to keep the environment clean to guard against diseases.
“We need to keep our lives protected against diseases that come from dirty environment. We want to appeal to locals not to dispose garbage and polythene bags wherever they find. We are here to demonstrate that we have to be clean in our hearts by getting rid of bad behaviors and also be physically clean as cleanliness is next to holiness.” Said Dr. Kazimba
Canon John Awodi, the Diocesan Secretary said that by engaging in the clean-up exercise, they are executing their mandate of preaching the gospel not only by word but also through action.
“As we mark 50 years, we decided that this shouldn’t only be a time of celebrations but also a time of re-awakening ourselves to the mandate that Jesus Christ gave us. The mandate to continue preaching the gospel. A holistic gospel that’s not just about preaching by word but also through action and change of attitudes.” Said Awodi
He added, “Today we decided to come to Kalerwe to demonstrate what we are supposed to be doing as a church, that is; preaching the gospel, teaching the people and also reaching out to the communities practically.
According to Ivan Naijuka, the spokesperson Kampala Diocese, following the launch, all churches under the diocese of Kampala will embark on a clean-up exercise in communities where they are located.
