4 contenders step down for NRM’s Ariko in Soroti East by-election

Soroti-Four aspirants for the Soroti City East parliamentary seat have stepped down in favor of National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Herbert Edmund Ariko.

The four, all independents, are Herbert Omoding, Joseph Ogita, Stephen Omoding and Sarah Inachu. These had picked expression of interest forms to contest for the Soroti City East MP seat and were due to be nominated on Tuesday. 

Addressing a press conference at the home of the Eastern region NRM vice chairperson Capt. Mike Mukula in Soroti, the four said they had agreed to quit the race and rally behind NRM’s flag bearer Ariko.

The seat in contention was previously occupied by Moses Okia Attan of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party whose election was nullified by the High Court on grounds that it was illegal for the Electoral Commission to reconstitute the boundaries of Soroti City East.

Ariko was Tuesday duly nominated by the Soroti City returning officer Catherine Eyu to run for the seat. He was accompanied to the nomination venue by Capt Mukula, Lydia Wanyoto, the NRM Women’s league Chairperson, Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Economic Monitoring, and the NRM’s Director of Mobilization Rosemary Seninde among other party district leaders.

Ariko was received by jubilant supporters moments after nomination whom he later addressed at Moruapesur Primary School.

Speaking to press shortly after nomination, Ariko promised equitable development, social and economic transformation to the people of Soroti City once elected into power.

Other candidates that are duly nominated include Moses Attan Okia of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) candidate Pascal Amuriat. By press time, Democratic Party (DP) Isaac Okore was pending nomination.

The nomination exercise which commenced Monday closes Tuesday. According to Electoral Commission road map, campaigns will be held between 21st July and 26th July ahead of polling day on 28th July 2022
