Evelyn Lagu, Ugandan singer, dies aged 41

Evelyn Lagu, the celebrated artist known as EvelynLove, has departed from us at the age of 41, surrendering to the relentless grip of heart and kidney complications within the confines of her Nabugabo residence. This morning, her son took to social media to share the heartbreaking news, revealing that she succumbed after a dialysis treatment. EvelynLove courageously battled severe kidney failure for over three years, a relentless struggle that cast a shadow over her illustrious music career. Among the cherished melodies she gifted us, songs like Mbulila, Ogumanga, Kasoma Bakuleka, I love you, Akalulu, Mbeelawo, and Wanjawulo etch her name in our hearts. Moreover, Lagu ventured into the world of acting, becoming a member of the revered “Zubairi Family.”

Despite facing health challenges, she remained dedicated to her craft, with plans for a charity concert set on October 28, 2023 at Papaz Spot in Makindye. She had previously attempted a kidney transplant in Turkey in June 2021 but couldn’t undergo the procedure due to her health condition. Medical advice suggested waiting for improved health.

Born in Kalungu, Masaka on June 1, 1982, Lagu’s early life was marked by adversity, losing her parents at a tender age. Nurtured by her aunt and uncle, she pursued education across various institutions, culminating in her A’levels completion at St. Peter’s SS Busubizi in 1999. Within Uganda’s artistic realm, Evelyn Lagu garnered immense respect as a gifted singer and actress. She lent her talents to esteemed musical ensembles and provided harmonious backing vocals for distinguished artists such as Carol Nakimera, Halima Namakula, Ragga Dee, Makoma, and Zambia’s Mampi. Her passing has cast a pall of grief and disbelief over the Ugandan music community, an industry that will forever cherish her indomitable spirit and enduring dedication.
