Zimbabwe – On Saturday, the Ugandan Community in Zimbabwe, popularly known as UGAZIM, came together in a joyous celebration to commemorate Uganda’s 61st Independence Day.
The event, held at 16 Tay Road in Vainona, Harare, showcased the unity and pride of the Ugandan diaspora residing in Zimbabwe as they honoured their nation’s milestone achievement.
The chief guest at the celebration was Ambassador Paul Amoru, Uganda’s High Commissioner Designate to the Republic of Zimbabwe. Ambassador Amoru expressed his gratitude and honour in celebrating this momentous occasion alongside the Ugandan community in Harare. The Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, accredited to Zimbabwe as well, reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Ugandan diaspora to strengthen commercial, economic, and warm bilateral ties between the two countries.
During the event, Ambassador Amoru commended the significant contributions made by the Ugandan community in Zimbabwe to the skilled and professional public service workforce, as well as international and multilateral organisations in the country. He acknowledged their resilience, patriotism, and their broader commitment to the Pan-African agenda.
Don Asiimwe Rucecerwa, the Chairperson of Ugandans in Zimbabwe, expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Amoru for being the first sitting High Commissioner to honour their invitation and personally grace their function. He also pledged to collaborate closely with the High Commission to mobilise Ugandans in Zimbabwe for development back home.
The commemoration of Uganda’s 61st Independence Day in Zimbabwe provided an opportunity for the Ugandan diaspora to celebrate their cultural heritage, exchange ideas, and foster stronger bonds within their community. The program included various activities such as prayer, a shared lunch, the singing of national anthems, and a presentation on the history of UGAZIM by Dr. Beata Tumushime.
Ambassador Amoru emphasised the significance of collaboration and partnerships between Uganda and Zimbabwe, highlighting the importance of bilateral relations.
The event also showcased the entrepreneurial spirit of Ugandans in Zimbabwe through a business advertisement segment, which highlighted their contributions to the local economy. Traditional dance performances added vibrancy and cultural richness to the festivities.
The celebration culminated with the cutting and serving of a celebratory cake, symbolising the sweet victory of Uganda’s independence. A vote of thanks concluded the official program, leaving all participants with a sense of togetherness and pride in their heritage.

Accompanied by Dennis Kalikola and Richard Bob Opio from the High Commission, Ambassador Amoru ensured the delivery of new passports and assisted in enrolling more Ugandans for National Identity Cards.
