USMID project fails to kick off in Lira City

By Norine Lamwaka

Projects under the Uganda support to municipal infrastructure development (USMID) in Lira city has failed to kick off on July 1, 2021 as planned.

Early this year, Lira city council awarded a tender for road construction, completion of the Coronation Park and construction of one children’s park at Adyel, in Lira City West Division.

The phase II projects were awarded to Al-Nuiami Group, Abubaker Technical Service, and Segamu 14 Consults Ltd.

The project which will cost government Shs 37.6 billion, is to tarmac 0.18km Obangakene road, Noteber 0.251km, Aber 0.204, Olwol 0.534, Uhuru Rd. 0.3km and Boundary road 2.177km.

It was anticipated that the two contractors would report for commencement of work by July 1, 2021.

However, Lira city Engineer Freddie Owiny says they are disappointed with the contractor that the contractor did not report for work up to date.

On Friday last week, the project was due for launch by the minister of Lands, housing and urban development Ms Judith Nabakooba but was cancelled under unclear circumstances.

Last evening, Lira city Engineer Freddie Owiny said they are so disappointed with the contractors for failing to report in time.

“The contractor has been committing to mobilize his equipment to begin work but up to date, they are not around. Every time we call him he has always lied to us that he is coming” Owiny said.

He added that they are tired of lies from the contractor because they are also under pressure from the city residents.

Owiny promised to follow up with the contractor to ensure he is on site by the end of this week.

A telephone number said to be for the contractor which was provided did not go through by press time.
