EXCLUSIVE: Fresh details emerge in the murder of UNMEB’s Nyakuni

Kampala – New details have emerged about the murder of Margaret Nyakuni Onzia, 66, the former deputy Executive Secretary Uganda Nurses and Midwife Examination Board (UNMEB).

Nyakuni died in a fire that was reportedly lit by her son ASP Edward Bua 38 a lawyer and police officer.

The incident happened on Saturday at her residence in Bugonga, Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso District.

According to a close relative who spoke to LBS Newsday on condition of anonymity, the police officer who he says is a habitual drug user murdered his mother over the family house he claims was left to him after his father’s death.

“Before the fateful day, the police officer had a discussion with his mother where he demanded that she leaves the house. The mother agreed to leave on condition that the son marries and settles down since she was also desirous of getting back to the village to enjoy her retirement. Little did Nyakuni know that her son had taken the advice in bad faith. The source said.

He added, ” On the fateful day, Edward came back home very late in the night as always and went straight to the kitchen, he lit the fire and when the smoke filled up the house, the maid whose room was next to the kitchen alerted Nyakuni but she was reluctant since she was used to her son’s misbehavior. Eventually Edward locked the mother inside her bed room before locking the main door and by the time the fire gutted the whole house, they couldn’t open the doors.

The relative says that when the maid realized the fire was already catching up and couldn’t open the doors, she broke the louvers and the burglarproof, threw her kid out and escaped the fire. The maid then made an alarm and alerted the neighbors but they weren’t helpful.

“As Nyakuni was struggling to get out of the house, she called her driver who alerted police but by the time they arrived at the scene, the fire had already consumed the roof of the house and the woman had already suffocated inside her bedroom.” Said the relative

He adds that Edward never ran away as he handed himself over to police.

The source says police took the body of the deceased for postmortem and later handed it over to the relatives for burial which is due today, Tuesday February 1, 2022 in Kango, Zombo district.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy  spokesperson, ASP Edward Bua is currently held at Entebbe police station pending investigations.
