Suspected highway robber cheats death, arrested

Dokolo -A suspected robber is nursing wounds sustained as he tried to waylay a truck along Lira-Soroti highway. The incident happened on Wednesday at around 3:00 am.

The suspect identified as Ronald Omara, 35, and two others are said to have silently boarded the truck from Adwoki trading center in Dokolo district with the intention of stealing commodities that were being transported.

However, their luck fell out when the driver of the truck noticed them and communicated with the driver of another truck that was following him to help in catching them.

On realizing that they had been noticed, the suspects reportedly tried to flee by jumping out of the truck. However, one of suspects; Omora, broke his leg and arm in the process and was seized by the truck drivers who beat him to a pulp before dumping him at Iguli primary school in Dokolo district.

Sergeant Joseph Olwit, the Officer in charge of Adwoki police post confirms the report in an interview with LBS Newsday. Olwit said a case has been opened against them under SD REF 05/18/05/2022.

On interrogation, Omara narrated how they boarded the vehicle from Adwoki primary school and were driven until the driver noticed them at Iguli Primary school and they tried to jump out before he got injured.

“One of the suspects identified as Alex Otiti was also arrested and detained. The third suspect, one Charles Opio, is still at large but we are looking for him.” Said Olwit

Olwit noted an increase in theft and robbery cases at the police post calling for intervention by local leaders to tackle this.

Jaspher Alele, the Chairperson LC1 of Abongorwot village says his office registers about 10 cases of theft a week.

David Oyuku, the Chairperson Adwoki trading center blames this on police releasing suspected criminals citing one of the suspects Alex Otiti who he says has been arrested and released several times.

In August 2021, Alex Otiti, Ronald Omara, Moses Odwongo, Opio Geoffrey and Ebong Denis were arrested over a similar offence. See more here: Five suspected highway robbers arrested in Dokolo district » LBS NewsDay
