New UICT Governing Council assumes office

Kampala- The new Governing Council of the Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology (UICT) has officially assumed office.

UICT is a public tertiary institution established by the Statutory Instrument under the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act specializing in skills-based and middle-level ICT training and skills development.

The 6th Governing Council took the mantle from the 5th Governing Council at a handover ceremony held in Kampala on Friday.

While officiating at the ceremony Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister for ICT and National Guidance welcomed the new team and cautioned the outgoing one that they are still part of UICT for guidance and leadership support for the institute to continue making progress.

Meanwhile, Dr. Baryomunsi revealed plans by government of making it mandatory for ICT and engineering graduates to go through UICT for certification before practice.

“…we are having discussions and thoughts where students after completion of their studies can intern at UICT in the same way that lawyers take a BAR course at LDC or internship at hospitals for nurses and doctors,” he said

In her remarks, Irene Kaggwa Ag. Executive Director UCC said the commission is committed to the vision of transforming UICT into a regional center of excellence, providing specialized training, research, ICT innovation and education in the digital age, in line with their master plan.

“I call upon the incoming Governing Council, Management and Staff of UICT, as well as other stakeholders, to join hands and work towards the realization of this vision,” said Kaggwa

On his part, Dr. Fredrick Edward Kitoogo the Principal UICT thanked the outgoing council for the selfless commitment to serve and indelible milestones achieved during their tenure of office for a period of three years from 2019 to 2022.

He congratulated the new team and pledged to give technical support for them to be able to deliver on this assignment. “We have much hope in your tenure as a way of continuing the good works to be handed over by the 5th Governing Council,” he said
