Oyam – North Kyoga fire brigade and rescue services are investigating circumstances under which a fuel tanker overturned and caught fire in the middle of the road on Friday.

According to Patrick Jimmy Okema the North Kyoga region police spokesperson, the incident happened at around 9:25 am on Friday at Amwa headquarters in Myene sub-county, Oyam district along the Kamdini-Gulu highway.

He says after getting the report, the fire brigade units of north Kyoga and Aswa regions responded and put off the fire.

“A team of police officers led by the OC Station Kamdini immediately rushed to the scene and informed CPS Oyam District who also rushed later after informing both the fire brigade north and Aswa regions. Both fire brigade units responded and put off the fire,” Okema said in a statement on Saturday morning.

According to preliminary findings, the truck caught fire after an accident.

“The driver and conductor (occupants) ran out of the truck after the accident while the truck had caught fire and they were taken by unknown vehicle to yet to be identified destination,” says Okema

He says the fuel truck number plates were burnt beyond recognition and is suspected to be South Sudan number plate which is made of aluminum.

Okema notes that inquiries are still ongoing to establish the cause of the accident that led to the truck turning into flames and also find out the right number plates of the fuel truck as well as the whereabouts of its occupants.
